Save the Spectral Movement

Today I played some ball with some buddies, and almost coughed up my guts and died. Its just been a coupla months since I had played and man, has my fitness level gone down or what. One obvious reason is the lack of excercise, but I realize I've been following a pretty unohealthy life style in general lately. Lack of sleep, stress, lotsa alcohol and last but not least, eating out ALL THE TIME!

So I'm thinking of changing at least one of them. Eating habits. Basically me is trying to get into cooking more often. I've done some cooking so far. Made rice a few times, dhal thrice and chicken twice. (I've been pretty good with the dhal and the chicken curry turned out pretty darn well the second time.) However I cannot be eating rice, dhal and chicken forever now can I? So here's where you the loving general public come into play.

'Save the Spectral' movement is all about saving me (a worthy specimen of the human race, destined to be immortalized at a museum one day) from dying of hunger. How do you do this? Ideally make some super tasty food and hire bikini clad Chalize Theron and Elisha Cuthbert to feed me while Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio mud/oil wrestle at my feet. But then I got this funny feeling that you might not. (Useless people you are, really.)

Next best alternative? Tell me how to make other food. Basically give me instructions on how to make stuff other than rice, dhal and simple chicken curry. Now remember a coupla things. I need proper INSTRUCTIONS. Not a list of things to be used and a two lines of cookery jargon. Proper quantities to be mixed and simple instructions.

Think of this as not only a chance to help a poor Sri Lankan lost in the big Apple to make a decent meal, but also an opprtunity to make a mass online mating call. Who knows, some hot chick/stud might be swept off their feet with your cooking skills and go knows what can happen.

If you thought that wasn't enough,
I'm gonna choose the best dish with the best set of instructions. The winner will get to enjoy the special SpectraCenrtoid dessert made with a personal touch. (Basically whipped cream, chocolate syrup and honey to be licked off yours truly's chest. Oh oh oh, there're cherries too.) Five personally autographed pictures of me cooking naked are also available as consolation prizes.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your cooking groove on baby.

Ooh this is right up my alley!

Jacket Potatoes: Buy a large baking potato, chuck in oven for about an hour. Turn it over halfway through. Stick a fork inside and see if it's done or not. Split the potato (cut it at the top basically) and add a dollop of butter and plenty of grated cheese (the potato should be hot enough to make the cheese melt) and serve with whatever else you like (salad is a healthy option, or some tuna-sweetcorn; can of tuna, can of sweetcorn, mix with mayo).

Pork chops: Marinade chops in marinade for a few hours. Usually I make it up with ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, seasoning, pepper, bit of honey, bit of mustard..basically whatever you feel like throwing in. Serve with salad or mashed potatoes (I'm presuming you know how to make that!).

Pasta bake: This is one of the easiest. Fill in a glass or pyrex baking dish with raw pasta. Add a can of Campbells condensced mushroom soup and then fill up that can with water and add the water too. Stir well and chuck in oven for about 30mins, stir halfway, check if pasta is half-done. Grate cheese on top and put back in oven for another 15mins or so. You could optionally add some sausage or bacon or whatever if you fancy it. Sweetcorn goes pretty well too.

Stir fry: Cut up chicken, mushroom, peppers. Fry chicken until browned, add the mushroom and peppers. Add stir fry sauce of choice (I personally like teriyake) and add a bit of dark soy sauce. Serve with rice or noodles.

This should give you a bit more variety to play about with. Goodluck!

I have some pretty simple ones:

Pizza
You will need: a phone book, a telephone, $$$
Instructions: Look up telephone number to pizza joint (I preferred the mom and pop ones vs the franchises, just cos they got the thin crust the way I like it). Call number. Order. Wait no more than 30 mins, pay the guy bringing the pizza (side note: how come I have never seen hot pizza delivery women??? Its always some weird mustached dude). Eat what you can, place the rest in the fridge for later.

Chinese:
Same as pizza, just look for ad with the most chinese lettering for authenticity. Dont worry, it all tastes like chicken anyway.

Sri Lankan:
Take a hike out to Sigiri. Its on 1st ave, between 5th and 6th. Damn good food.

Indian at 4 am:
Haandi, on Lex and 28th. Its easy to get a cab there, cos chances are the cabbie is desi, and was on his way there anyway.

Hope this helps! And yeah, my stove was purely for decoration :-P

staticx: Very funny dude. Thanks a lot :P

darwin: You woman. In my cave. Cook. Auuga!

Thanks a whole heap. Excellent stuff. Coupla things though. Dunno how to marinade and don have an oven (except for a microwave). Hopefully the new place will.

jl: Thanks mate. Looks interesting, although the front page stuff look a bit fancy.

lankanfunkin: Ha ha ha. Good stuff. I can totally relate dude. I've actually been to the sigiri several times. Coupla my friends are quite pally with the owners so we hang out there for hours sometimes. And there roti with "sambole" is just awsome.

Btw, do you stay in the city?

Lol, you're welcome, glad to be of help. No thanks I'll pass the offer of the cave!

Marinade means basically letting the meat (chops or drumsticks or whatever) sit in the 'sauce' for a few hours. As I said you can make up this 'sauce' with whatever catches your fancy (safe choices are meat seasoning, salt, pepper and tomato puree/sauce), just have a wee taste of it before dumping all your meat in it incase you added sugar and chillie powder or some other equally weird combo!

No oven?! That's awful! I suppose the chops could be pan fried although grilled usually tastes a lot better. Whatever the case just cut through and check it's completely done (i.e. no pink bits) unless you fancy food poisoning.

tilapia (or any other white fish) steaks
onions
couple of types of peppers
mushrooms
other veggies

Wash the tilapia in lime juice, place in a container. Mix seasoning (i.e. pepper, bit of chillie powder, herbs, etc, etc) with olive oil
Marinade the tilapia with the olive oil seasoning, let sit for awhile

Chop up the veggies
Get some tin foil, place a steak in the foil, put some veggies on top, fold over, leave a small gap
Place in oven and bake until the flesh flakes easily

Its pretty good and bloody healthy for u as well:)

I dont really look at a recipe when I make this so apologies if the instructions are a bit hazy
